Epilepsy research leader partners with health intelligence platform to improve early diagnosis, recognition of symptoms and treatment
CHICAGO – July 18, 2017 – Outcome Health, which partners with healthcare providers to serve actionable health intelligence at the moment of care to improve patient outcomes, today announced a partnership with the American Epilepsy Society (AES). Working together, the organizations will ensure that those living with epilepsy and those yet to be diagnosed have access to the information that they need to make better health decisions.
The partnership will bring AES educational content and the Outcome Health platform to the 3,800 active physicians that belong to the American Epilepsy Society. It will also, for the first time, offer AES content to relevant offices in Outcome Health’s existing membership of over 41,000 practices.
Epilepsy is the second leading cause of death from a neurological condition and affects more people in the U.S. than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease combined. While epilepsy can usually be treated effectively, it presents itself in many different ways, so patients and healthcare providers may not recognize its symptoms. This can result in delays in diagnosis, effective treatment and referral to a specialist or epilepsy treatment center when needed. These delays increase the risk of seizures, brain damage or injury, disability and even early death.
“Because epilepsy presents in many different ways, these kinds of educational tools are an important way to help people recognize symptoms, obtain early diagnosis, and better understand treatments and the best ways they can help manage their disease,” said Eli M. Mizrahi, MD, president of the American Epilepsy Society.
Outcome Health’s platform includes technologies such as the Exam Room Tablet, which can onboard patients to lifestyle management programs as well as deliver interactive resources and health assessments to patients pre-consultation. Technologies also include the Digital Anatomy Board, which offers access to 3D anatomical renderings for use during the consultation, including images of the nervous system that can be used by physicians to mark, annotate and better explain condition states and treatments.
“One in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime, and it affects people of all ages, races and economic backgrounds,” said Matthew Garms, Directory, Associations Partnership at Outcome Health. “By combining leading research and insights from the American Epilepsy Society with the impactful technology of Outcome Health’s platform, our organizations share an exciting opportunity to come together to improve patient outcomes for the millions affected by this disorder.”
