A message from CEO Matt McNally:
To our Outcome Health family,
As an organization, before we spoke, we listened.
We listened to our Black teammates, Black family members, Black friends, and Black board members.
We listened to learn, we listened to empathize.
As an organization, before we spoke, we marched.
We marched in Florida, New York, Illinois, California, Minnesota, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.
We marched to show support, we marched to mourn, we marched for a better tomorrow.
Over the past several weeks, we have learned without a doubt that racism and white supremacy are widespread problems in the United States. Many of our white colleagues, including myself, felt that we were not part of the problem…yet it’s clear now that we must be part of the solution.
As we have held up the mirror closer to ourselves, we have realized that for decades, issues of social and economic injustice, racism, and white supremacy have landed on the doorstep of Black Americans.
Today, we acknowledge that it is on our doorstep too. We need to address this within ourselves, in our homes, at work, and in our communities.
Rather than tell you all the things we are going to “DO” as a company, I want to help our Outcome Health family not only change what we do, but more importantly alter our state of “BEING.” I believe that the best way to change who we are as humans is to give all of you the time, the space, and the opportunity to create a stronger community that has zero tolerance for racism and white supremacy, within our four walls as a company and beyond.
I have been listening to Aurora Archer, one of our OH board members. She has shared a few ideas and concepts that have resonated with me which I will use as the core for how we, as an organization and as individuals, will fight this problem.
First, Aurora told me “this is not a sprint, it is a marathon” – and we have only left the starting line. As a team we have a lot to do, a lot to learn, and a lot to enact. Second, she told me that she and the Black community “do not need allies, we need accomplices.” We will not be one of the companies that places a diversity and inclusion band-aid over a problem that began in 1619. We will be a company that will walk the walk, not just talk the talk….it’s who we are. And it starts today with each and every one of us.
We are fortunate to work at a company where over 50% of our colleagues identify themselves as diverse. Prior to joining OH, I came from an industry where this was far from the case. Furthermore, we are part of a company that has women leaders, gay leaders, and people of color leaders. We need to harness this diversity and include and build upon Black representation in these roles.
Mile One is designed around giving you the time to educate, be educated, and to get involved, at work and in your community. Here are some programs and initiatives that we are launching over the next several days. I promise there will be more to come.
- Next week Aurora will host a safe space dialogue, for all teammates who would like to share, listen, and collaborate.
- Joyce Miller-Porter will lead the OH Diversity and Inclusion Council. Be on the lookout for ways to get involved.
- We are adding four PTO days for all employees. Use these days to educate, be educated, attend a march, volunteer, and partake in an activity that helps show support for the Black community.
- Every employee will receive a $200 annual reimbursable stipend. These dollars will be used to purchase books, take a seminar, visit a Black exhibition, or even donate to a Black charity of your choice. My only ask is you bring back what you learned or discovered with your teammates.
- Every employee will be given the full day off to vote in local, state, and national elections. We want your voices to be heard, and one of the best places for that to happen is by casting your vote. We encourage you to take the day to talk to friends and family members around issues of race and diversity, and why you are voting the way you choose.
Last but not least, I want to reinforce that per our Code of Conduct, we have ZERO tolerance for racism and white supremacy at Outcome Health. If you see issues related to either, please contact our Integrity Hotline. As a reminder, the hotline is anonymous and is managed by an outside third-party – it is a safe way to voice any concerns and a way for you to be heard. Additionally, every employee has access to free mental health resources available through our employee assistance program. We want to support your whole self in this fight.
In closing, I want our Black teammates to know we are here for you, we are listening, and we are taking action.
